MIT Jameel Clinic invited to the 1st Pan Arab Congress of Thoracic Surgery

MIT PhD student Aziz Ayed presented at the first Pan Arab Congress of Thoracic Surgery.

Tunis, Tunisia Nov. 6 and 7 — MIT Jameel Clinic PhD student Aziz Ayed was invited to speak at the first Pan Arab Congress of Thoracic Surgery about Sybil, a state-of-the-art deep learning model that predicts six year lung cancer risk from a low-dose CT scan.

The conference was coordinated by the Tunisian Thoracic Surgery Association (TTSA) and the Arab Society of Thoracic Surgery and is the largest thoracic surgery event in the Arab world.

During the event, Ayed spoke about opportunities and challenges in Sybil’s deployment in hospitals worldwide since its release in 2023 by researchers at the Jameel Clinic and Mass General Brigham.

“I am thankful to Prof. Abdessalem Hentati and his student Wassim Chaieb for the invitation to speak at this exciting event,” said Ayed. “I am confident that this is the beginning of long-term collaborations with hospitals in the region.”

Prof. Hentati, who is the Head of the TTSA, called the conference a “landmark event [representing] a unique opportunity to bring together the brightest minds in thoracic surgery from across the Arab world and beyond. Tunisia is deeply honored to have been chosen by the Arab League of Thoracic Surgery as the host nation for this prestigious gathering.”
