On Sunday, Aug. 20, the MIT Jameel Clinic hosted a pit stop for the Susan G. Komen New England 3-Day Walk. This marks the third consecutive year that the Jameel Clinic has supported this inspiring event. The 3-Day Walk brings together survivors, families, friends, and advocates to raise awareness and funds for breast cancer research and care. Since its inception, the initiative has raised more than $47.9 million. This year, approximately 705 walkers each raised at least $2,300. Over the course of 60 miles across the Boston area, participants rely on pit stops for encouragement, water, snacks, and a chance to rest before continuing their journey.

Susan G. Komen’s support is especially meaningful as the organization supported the development of Mirai, a deep learning model designed to improve early detection of breast cancer. Today, Mirai is being deployed in hospitals around the world as part of the Jameel Clinic AI-Hospital Network, offering clinicians a powerful tool to predict a patient’s future risk of developing breast cancer and enabling earlier, potentially life-saving interventions.

The impact of the 3-Day extends far beyond the miles walked. Each year, hundreds of participants join together to honor loved ones, support survivors, and contribute to a global movement dedicated to finding a cure for breast cancer. The event is a powerful reminder that progress against this disease requires both groundbreaking research and the determination of communities who refuse to give up the fight.

This year’s walk also carried a special sense of remembrance. Mamie Bevers, one of the beloved biker volunteers (the “caboose”) and a breast cancer survivor who dedicated countless hours to keeping walkers safe and supported, passed away earlier this year from leukemia. Her absence was felt deeply, but her spirit was present in every mile walked and every cheer shared along the route.

As walkers completed their 60-mile journey, the Jameel Clinic was proud to play a small role in sustaining their strength and determination. The occasion was a reminder that progress in research and progress in community both move step-by-step. We look forward to supporting the next generation of walkers, advocates, and innovators who will move us closer to a world without fear of breast cancer.
